A multitude of heads of state and celebrities from all over the world descended on South Africa in December 2013 for Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in a Johannesburg stadium. So dense was the throng that some got stuck in the lobby.

I found myself standing next to Crown Prince Felipe of Spain, whose friendly smile froze into a frown as a striking blonde woman in a short black dress advanced towards us. He darted away.

Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein was the key figure in a scandal rocking the Spanish royal family — a Danish adventuress who had reinvented herself as a German princess and then as mistress to the king of Spain, Felipe’s father, Juan Carlos.
