Genie Bouchard continued her climb up the WTA Tour rankings Saturday when she defeated Spaniard Paula Badosa 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the TEB BNP Paribas clay-court tournament in Istanbul.

Bouchard, who had to qualify for the main draw, had to survive a couple of three-hour matches to reach the semifinals, but she breezed through Saturday’s match in one hour and 25 minutes. She broke Badosa’s serve four times and fought off six of seven break points on her serve.

Bouchard, who reached a career-high No. 5 in the rankings in 2014, dropped to No. 330 before than pandemic halted play. Her win Saturday guarantees her a ranking of 163 and she can climb to 137 with a win in Sunday’s final.

Her opponent will be Patricia Maria Tig of Romania, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Czech qualifier Tereza Martincova.

Leylah Annie Fernandez, the 18-year-old from Laval, lost in the first round of qualifying for the Rome Open. She lost to Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. On the men’s side, 10th-seeded Steven Diez, a Toronto native who is based in Spain, advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Radu Albot of Moldova.
