Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti kick-off their first full season’s in charge of Spurs and Everton…
Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti were both appointed mid-season at Tottenham and Everton respectively, and today marks the start of their first full season in charge.
Today’s match marks the beginning of a hectic schedule for Spurs, who play nine matches in 22 days.
That schedule has only increased Tottenham’s need for further reinforcements, with Mourinho hoping to bring in another striker to add competition – and respite – to star man Harry Kane.
Dan Kilpatrick is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today, and he – alongside Matt Davies – will bring you all the action from north London.
There are plenty of new faces in the Everton side as well, with new signings James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure all named in the starting XI.
It’s a familiar back five of Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Mina and Digne, while Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin start up top.
As expected, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty are both handed their Tottenham debuts today against Everton!
Mourinho has opted for exactly what was predicted, with Eric Dier partnering Toby Alderweireld in defence, with a front four of Dele Alli, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane.
A blow for Spurs, however, is that Giovani Lo Celso is out of the squad with a hamstring injury.
Today’s fixture between Tottenham and Everton has proved a favourable one for the home side, who have won 27 of their 56 Premier League matches.
Everton, on the other hand, have won just eight of those games, while 21 have finished as a draw.
Last season, the sides drew 1-1 at Goodison Park before a narrow post-restart home win for Spurs in July.
The last time Everton beat Spurs was all the way back in 2012, and the last time they won away was in 2008!
We already know Japhet Tanganga will miss the match. The youngster is Tottenham’s only confirmed injury absentee, nursing a thigh problem after initially dealing with a stress fracture to his back.
Mourinho will also make a late call on the fitness of Giovani Lo Celso, who is carrying a hamstring issue.
As for Everton, Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes have both been declared fit after injury, but Mason Holgate has been ruled out with a toe problem.
Jose Mourinho is expected to hand debuts to new signings Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty against Everton today.
Tottenham also completed the eyebrow-raising transfer of Matt Doherty, who is expected to slot in straight away at right-back.
Joe Hart is not expected to feature today, though it will be interesting to see whether it will be he or Paulo Gazzaniga on the bench.
Jose Mourinho insists Tottenham will only sign a striker who is not « afraid » of competition with Harry Kane.
The Spurs boss insists he is confident of bringing in a new centre-forward this month, while warning his current players it would be better to leave the club if they are not prepared to fight for a place.
Spurs have previously found it difficult to find a forward willing to compete with the England captain, and Alvaro Morata is among the players to have turned down interest from north London due to concerns over game-time.
« And if the striker is afraid to come to Tottenham and the striker is afraid of competition, then I don’t want the striker.
« So it’s not for me to convince him, it’s for him to convince me. If he says, ‘I don’t want to go because I don’t want to be in a squad where we have Harry Kane and Sonny, Lamela, Lucas, I don’t want to go to that squad’, then goodbye. »
As Tottenham face Everton today in their Premier League season opener, Jose Mourinho has called on his Tottenham players to ‘give everything for the fans.
As with all Premier League matches, supporters are not permitted to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today as the UK continues to restrain mass-meeting as it battles against the coronavirus pandemic.
“In the end, I feel privileged, because I can be there, and my first words are for all of you who would love to be there and can’t be there.
“We are, of course, very much committed with our jobs, very much committed with our club, and at the same time, our club means all of you.
“I have to make sure the boys express that respect towards you and every time we put one foot in our stadium, or any stadium, wearing a Tottenham shirt, I have to make sure the players are going to give everything for you. »
Hugo Lloris insists Tottenham are preparing to win « ugly » for Jose Mourinho, who he says is still trying to instil a winning mentality within the squad.
Mourinho inherited a squad low of confidence when he took over from Mauricio Pochettino last November, taking them from 14th to sixth place with a strong finish to the season after a highly turbulent campaign.
The north London club kick-off their 2020-21 campaign at home to Everton this afternoon, and captain Lloris agrees Tottenham must be prepared to be « naughty » to win.
“It can be true in football, you sometimes have to know how to win in the ugly way,” said Lloris.
