Typhoon Chan-hom emerges south of Japan – The Mainichi

TOKYO — Typhoon Chan-hom, the 14th tropical storm of the year, was situated south of the Japanese archipelago and remained almost stationary as of 3 p.m. on Oct. 5, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

The storm had a central air pressure of 996 hectopascals, with a maximum sustained wind speed near its center of 18 meters per second (64.8 kilometers per hour) and a maximum gust speed of 25 m/s (90 kph).

Strong winds of at least 15 m/s (54 kph) were lashing areas within 330 kilometers south and 165 kilometers north of the typhoon’s core.

By 3 p.m. on Oct. 6, the typhoon is expected to hold a central air pressure of 990 hectopascals, with a maximum sustained wind speed near its core of 25 m/s (90 kph) and a gust speed of up to 35 m/s (126 kph).

The typhoon is forecasted to be stronger by 3 p.m. on Oct. 7, having a central air pressure of 970 hectopascals with a maximum sustained wind speed near its center of 35 m/s (126 kph) and a gust speed of up to 50 m/s (180 kph). Areas within a 260-kilometer radius from the core of the probability circle could be lashed by strong winds of at least 25 m/s (90 kph).
