It took over a quarter and a half, but the Air Raid offense has its first touchdown of the Mike Leach era at Mississippi State.
A possession after throwing a pick six, MSU quarterback KJ Costello found Tyrell Shavers for a 31-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead with 7:45 remaining in the second quarter at LSU. It was a connection between two graduate transfers as Costello came to MSU from Stanford and Shavers from Alabama.
So far in the game, Costello is 15-of-25 with 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Shavers’ catch was his first as a Bulldog. State is narrowly leading in the game despite dominating the stat sheet so far. They have 201 yards of total offense to LSU’s 47. Tigers’ quarterback Myles Brennan has 34 passing yards.
Costello is kicking off the Mike Leach era today as the starting quarterback, just a year shy of running the offense in the Pac-12 for the Stanford Cardinal. While he didn’t have the opportunity to complete his legacy in California, he left a pretty good one as he finished inside the top 10 in several passing categories including yards, passing efficiency, completion percentage, touchdowns, passing attempts and total offense.
Shortly after Leach was hired at MSU, he searched the transfer portal for a quarterback that could help ease the transition. Though Costello hasn’t played in the Air Raid offense, he was a great fit for what Leach wanted to do from a talent and a mindset stand point. True freshman Will Rogers competed well with Costello in camp, but the senior quarterback edged him out and earned the starting nod.
Shavers was a backup wide receiver at Alabama behind NFL talent but was cutting his teeth by being a standout on special teams. He had just one reception in the 28 games that he played but did score a special teams touchdown. He transferred to MSU as a graduate transfer and has two years to play for the Bulldogs and gives them a talented 6’6, 200-pound athlete on the outside.
