The Aprilia MotoGP team have announced that they will replace Bradley Smith with Lorenzo Savadori for the last three rounds of the 2020 season

Test driver Smith was recruited to replace Andrea Iannone for the start of the season, as the former Grand Prix winner continued to serve an 18-month doping ban

The Briton has scored 12 points during the season and achieved a best 12th result in the Andalusian Grand Prix

But Aprilia has now announced that Smith will not see the season with the marque, but has not explained why, but has confirmed that the British rider has not been dropped and remains its test rider

In his place will come Savadori, former World Superbike rider and current Aprilia test rider, who will make his MotoGP debut at the European Grand Prix next month

Savadori became Aprilia MotoGP test rider at the start of the year and dominated the CIV Superbike Championship in Italy this year on an RSV4

“First of all, I want to thank Bradley for his efforts this season,” said Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola

« He took on the unexpected role of factory driver with great dignity and outstanding performance, and his contribution was extremely valuable

« We are now looking forward to Lorenzo’s debut. This promotion is certainly a reward for his great season as a CIV rider, dominating the Superbike category

« But it is also a growth stage for a pilot who will also be a tester for our RS-GP in 2021

« Driving our new project in the race will certainly be a step forward for Lorenzo and, consequently, for all Aprilia Racing »

Savadori added: « To say that I am happy would be an understatement and I would like to thank Aprilia Racing for this great opportunity.

« I will arrive prepared for the event, thanks to both the work done during testing on the RS-GP and the CIV season which has just ended

« Now I have to rearrange my thoughts, glean the miles I have straddled the RS-GP and make sure I am ready and focused for the first practice session »

A decision on rescinding Iannone’s doping ban is expected by mid-November, following a hearing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport a fortnight ago

It is understood that outgoing LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow has made a pre-agreement with Aprilia to join Aleix Espargaro in 2021, although the brand has on several occasions publicly expressed a desire to retain Iannone if they can.
