LEXINGTON, Va – Director of the Virginia Military Institute resigned after state officials ordered an investigation into allegations of « relentless racism » at the school, detailed in a Washington article Post

General JH Binford Peay III announced his resignation Monday after 17 years at the Virginia Military Institute

Gov Ralph Northam co-wrote a letter with other state officials and lawmakers to the state-backed school’s Visitors Council last Monday, expressing « deep concerns about clear cultivation and appalling structural racism underway ”at VMI The letter said the state would fund an independent investigation into the school’s culture, policies, practices and fairness in disciplinary proceedings, the Post reported.

Here is General Peay’s full letter to John Boland, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VMI:

« On Friday October 23, 2020, the governor’s chief of staff reported that the governor and some legislative leaders had lost confidence in my leadership as the superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute and wanted me to resign Therefore, as of today, October 26, 2020, I am resigning

It is the honor of my life to be the Superintendent of VMI for over seventeen years I have always loved and will always love the Institute, all of our cadets, alumni and the whole family VMI Pamela and I send you our best wishes for the future and we will greet you with great admiration and tenderness as your work continues to serve the nation so well. »

« Today our superintendent submitted his resignation to the Visitors’ Council We accepted it with deep regret

General Peay has served VMI exceptionally well as Superintendent for over 17 years General Peay is a great American, patriot and hero He profoundly changed our school for the better in every way

General Peay and his wife Pamela serve as a model of dedicated service to our nation and the Commonwealth

The Board of Visitors should immediately turn their attention to finding our new superintendent In doing so, we will remain focused on our mission of preparing citizen-soldiers from all walks of life I ask our alumni to remain focused on the positive mission and to support the Institute and the Council as we secure a future in which the Institute continues to contribute in a unique and vital way to our nation and to our State »
